Do you need a birth time?

Short answer: you can make a meaningful chart without a birth time — & an exact time completes it. The time sets the rising sign & the houses, the two layers that make a chart fully your baby’s own.

The good news for parents: unlike the rest of us squinting at forty-year-old paperwork, you were there. Recently. The time exists somewhere in your records, & below is every place it tends to hide.

ALMOST.

A chart without a birth time still reads. The rising sign & the houses are the two layers it can’t draw.

What the birth time changes

Three things depend on the clock:

  • The rising signit changes roughly every two hours, so “morning-ish” can be the difference between a Cancer rising & a Leo rising. This is how your baby meets the world; it’s worth precision.
  • The housesthe twelve life areas planets land in. Without a time, the planets still have signs, but nowhere to live.
  • The moon’s sign, occasionallythe moon changes signs every two & a half days, so on switchover days the time decides whether your baby has, say, a Pisces moon or an Aries moon. (Two very different bedtimes.)

What still works without a time

Plenty. The sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars & the slower planets hold their signs all day, & most aspects between planets hold too. On most days the moon sign also survives. That’s the core essence, the mind, the affection style, the will & most of the chart’s internal conversations — intact.

So if the time is gone, the chart is still worth drawing. It’s a portrait with one layer softened. Still your baby. Still recognizable.

Where to find the birth time

In rough order of how often it works:

  • The birth certificatemany US states print the time on the long-form version. If your copy doesn’t show it, request the long form from vital records.
  • Hospital paperworkdischarge summaries, the bassinet card, the little footprint sheet. The time is usually on at least one of them.
  • Your photoscheck the metadata on the first pictures. Phones timestamp everything. The photo taken four minutes after birth has been quietly holding the answer this whole time. (Strange. Wonderful.)
  • Your peoplepartners, doulas, midwives & grandmothers remember more than you’d think. So do birth announcement texts.

If you truly can’t find it

Use noon. A noon chart splits the difference & keeps every placement that doesn’t need precision — astrologers use this convention constantly. Read the chart for what it is: sun, moon-most-likely, Mercury, Venus, Mars & the aspects. Skip the rising & the houses & lose nothing that remains.

And write this down for the next generation: the minute your grandchild arrives, someone check the clock. Ready to see what the sky holds either way? The chart is free, with or without the minute. Which drawer is your long-form certificate in?

Common questions

Is a birth chart accurate without a birth time?

Partially. The sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars & planet-to-planet aspects are accurate from the date alone, and the moon sign holds on most days. The rising sign & houses require an exact time, so a chart without one is a softened portrait rather than a wrong one.

How exact does the birth time need to be?

Within about 15–20 minutes is enough for nearly every purpose. The rising sign shifts about every two hours, so a small rounding error rarely changes it — though a birth near a sign boundary rewards precision.

My birth certificate doesn’t show a time — now what?

Request the long-form (full) certificate from your state’s vital records office; the short form often omits the time while the long form records it. Hospital records & the metadata on first photos are the next best sources.

What is birth time rectification?

A technique where an astrologer works backward from major life events to estimate an unknown birth time. It’s a reasonable last resort for adults; for a baby, records & photos will almost always get you there faster & more reliably.

the chart is free. always.
