A birth chart for a baby is the sky, paused. The exact minute they arrived, from the exact place they arrived, every planet held where it stood. Astrologers call it a natal chart. I call it the first true thing anyone wrote down about them. (The hospital wrote down a weight. This writes down a person.)

I’ve been drawing these for thirteen years, & the baby charts still get me. A baby born today has a sun sign, sure. They also have a moon sign that describes how they settle, a rising sign that describes how they meet a new room, & a whole arrangement of planets that describes the pace they’ll take through the world. Their pace. Already set. Already theirs.

What it hands you is a description of temperament — specific enough that most parents recognize their baby in the moon sign within a sentence or two. (Which night the sleep regression ends stays a mystery. Sorry.)

Three things. Their birth date, their birth place & their birth time, as close to the minute as you can get. The time is the one people skip, & it’s the one that matters most: it sets the rising sign & the twelve houses, & on certain days it settles which sign the moon was in.

Where to find it: the birth certificate, the hospital discharge papers, or the first photo on your phone (the timestamp is usually within minutes of the real thing). Ask the person who was watching the clock. Someone always was.

If the time is truly gone, pull the chart anyway. You’ll still get the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, the outer planets & most of the aspects between them. The moon sign holds on most days too. That’s a real chart with real things to say. More on that in do you need a birth time?

  • The chart wheel — the whole sky, drawn as a circle, with every planet marked at its exact degree.
  • Their Big Three — sun, moon & rising, with a short description of each written for a baby. See what the sun, moon & rising mean for a baby.
  • Every placement — all ten planets plus the nodes & Chiron, each with sign, degree & house.
  • Their moon phase at birth — new, full, waxing or waning, & what that lunar light tends to look like in a small person.
  • The aspects — the angles between planets, listed by strength, so you can see where their chart flows easily & where it holds tension.

The free chart shows you the map. The reading walks it with you. The baby & child reading is fourteen chapters, written from your baby’s exact chart: their core essence, their emotional world & how they soothe, how they’ll learn & play & push, what they need from you when the world gets loud, & the particular ways they’ll reach for it. $39, once. Yours to keep.

It arrives as a keepsake PDF you can print, tuck into the baby book, or read on your phone at 3am with one thumb. (I’ve read plenty of things at 3am with one thumb. This one is meant for that.)

Every chapter names the placement it comes from, so you can check it against the wheel. Nothing generic. If a sentence applies to every baby ever born, it doesn’t belong in there.

A sun-sign horoscope has one piece of information about your baby: the month they were born. That’s a twelfth of the population. Sweet, & a little thin.

A birth chart for a baby has the whole sky. Two Scorpio babies born a week apart can have a Cancer moon & an Aries moon, & the second one will fight bedtime like bedtime insulted them while the first one melts into it. Same sun. Different child. The chart is how you tell the two apart before the toddler years make it obvious.

And here’s the thing I keep coming back to as a mother of a toddler: the chart gave me permission. Permission to parent the baby in front of me & let the advice written for some other baby drift past. Isn’t that what we all wanted someone to hand us at the hospital?

Common questions

What is a baby birth chart?

A baby birth chart (or baby natal chart) is a map of every planet’s exact position at the moment & place your baby was born. It records the sun, moon, rising sign, all the planets & the angles between them. Astrology reads those positions as a description of temperament: how a baby settles, how they take in the world & what kind of comfort works for them.

Can you do a birth chart for a newborn?

Yes. A newborn’s chart is complete the moment they are born, so you can calculate it the same day. Many parents pull the chart during the newborn weeks while the birth time is fresh in memory, then return to it as sleep, feeding & the first big feelings show up.

Do I need my baby’s exact birth time?

An exact time gives you the full chart: the rising sign, the houses & a certain moon sign. Without it you still get the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, the outer planets & most aspects, & the moon sign on most days. Check the birth certificate or hospital paperwork; the recorded time is usually accurate to a few minutes.

Is the baby birth chart free?

Yes. The baby birth chart calculator on this page is free: the full wheel, the Big Three, every placement with sign & degree, the moon phase & the aspect list. The written fourteen-chapter reading of the whole chart is a one-time purchase if you want to go further.

What does a baby’s moon sign mean?

The moon sign describes a baby’s emotional wiring: how they feel safe, how they soothe & what they reach for when they are overwhelmed. A Taurus moon settles through the body (warmth, weight, the same blanket). A Gemini moon settles through sound & change of scene. For a baby, the moon is often the most recognizable line in the whole chart.
