Where you click & where you rub

Synastry

You have a relationship with each of your children that is unlike your relationship with anyone else alive. You knew that. Astrology just has a way to draw it.

Synastry lays your birth chart & your child’s chart on top of each other & reads how they interact — where your planets land in their sky & theirs in yours. The result is a portrait of the dynamic itself: the ease you can’t take credit for, the friction you couldn’t seem to fix, the strange telepathy at bedtime.

With romantic synastry, people want a compatibility score. With your child, the question is softer & bigger. You’re already bonded for life. The question is: what is this bond made of?

BOTH.

The same geometry draws where you click & where you rub.

How two charts talk to each other

In synastry, the aspects run between charts — your planets forming angles to theirs. Easy angles (trines, sextiles) are the places your energies cooperate without effort. Hard angles (squares, oppositions) are where two real wirings genuinely pull different directions. Conjunctions — your planet right on top of theirs — are the loudest contacts of all, for warmth or for friction.

A few real examples of what that sounds like at home:

  • Your moon trine their moonemotional weather in the same language. You often soothe them correctly by accident. The 3am shorthand.
  • Your Saturn on their sunyour presence lands as structure & gravity. Steadying at its best; heavy if the structure never softens. Worth knowing you carry this weight in their sky.
  • Your Mercury square their moonyour reasonable words keep arriving while they’re still mid-feeling, & land as dismissal. The fix is sequence: feel first, discuss after. (Simple. Never easy.)
  • Their Mars on your moonthis child activates you like nobody else. The one who found the button. Because in the overlay, they’re standing on it.

What the friction aspects actually mean

Here’s the reframe synastry hands a tired parent: the recurring friction with one particular child has a structure. It repeats in the same places because two fixed wirings meet at the same angle every day. The square between your charts will still be there Tuesday. So will the trine.

That’s oddly liberating. A dynamic with a shape can be worked with — you can see which of your planets is in the collision & choose its higher octave on purpose. And the hard aspects are load-bearing: the Saturn contacts that feel strict are often where a child learns safety; the Mars contacts that spark are where they learn their strength meets a wall that loves them. A synastry of nothing but trines sounds lovely & builds less muscle.

Why one child is easy & one is a mystery

Parents feel this & rarely say it out loud: one child feels effortless, another feels like ongoing translation. Synastry says it plainly — you have a different overlay with each child. Harmonious moon contacts with one; a stack of squares with another. Different geometry, different daily experience. Love, identical. Ease, unevenly distributed. Guilt, optional & unnecessary.

The mystery child is usually the one whose chart shares the least with yours — & that’s its own gift. They’ll show you rooms of the sky your own chart never opened. (Their siblings have geometry with each other too, but that’s the next article.)

Reading your own

Start with both charts — each one is free. Compare moons first: same element & you’ll see why comfort flows easily; different elements & you’ve found the translation work you’ve been doing by feel for years. Then notice where your Saturn & Mars land in their chart. Gently. Those are the places your presence weighs the most.

A full connection reading walks the whole overlay — every cross-aspect between your sky & theirs, read as one woven story of the bond. It tends to explain things you’ve felt since the delivery room & never had words for.

Because that’s the thing about this small person. They came through you, & they arrived as someone else entirely. Isn’t the space between those two facts the most interesting place in the house?

Common questions

What is parent-child synastry?

Synastry compares two birth charts — yours & your child’s — by reading the aspects your planets make to theirs. It describes the relationship dynamic itself: where you understand each other effortlessly, where friction repeats, and what each of you activates in the other.

Can synastry explain why I clash with one of my children?

Yes — recurring friction usually maps to hard aspects between the two charts (squares, oppositions, or contacts to your Mars or Saturn). Seeing the structure turns the clash from a character judgment into a dynamic with a shape you can work with.

What’s the most important aspect in parent-child synastry?

Moon contacts. The moon is emotional need & soothing, so moon-to-moon aspects (and anything touching either moon) describe the caregiving channel — whether comfort flows in the same language or needs translation. Saturn & Mars contacts are the next most formative.

Do I need both exact birth times for synastry?

Exact times give the complete overlay (house placements & precise moon degrees). Without one of the times, planet-to-planet aspects still hold & the reading remains meaningful — the house layer just softens. Birth dates & places are the minimum.

the chart is free. always.
