Why they’re so different
Every parent of two eventually says the sentence: “They came from the same place. How are they this different?”
Astrology’s answer is almost cheeky in its simplicity: they were born under different skies. Even twenty months apart, the moon has changed signs ten times over, the rising depends on the hour, & the whole geometry of the moment is new. Same parents. Different weather at arrival.
Here’s how to read your cubs side by side — & what the space between their charts says about the alliance, the warfare & everything in between.
SAME
house, same parents, different sky. The moon alone moves a full sign every two & a half days.
Same parents, different skies
Take two hypothetical sisters. Both Aries suns, even — born two years apart in the same week of spring. The first has a Cancer moon & a Virgo rising: a fire engine with a tender core & a careful doorway, the toddler who bosses the dolls & then can’t sleep without you. The second has a Sagittarius moon & a Leo rising: fire on fire, the one who greets the world like a returning celebrity & repairs her moods in the backyard at full speed.
Same sun sign. Two entirely different children — because the sun is one instrument & the chart is the orchestra. This is why comparing kids by sun sign alone tells you almost nothing, & why parents who pull both full charts usually go quiet for a minute. There it is. On paper. The difference you’ve been describing to relatives for years.
What to compare first
Set the two charts side by side (both free, one profile each) & look at three layers before anything else:
- Their moonsthe headline. Different moon elements mean different soothing manuals under one roof: the Taurus-moon cub needs the routine kept, the Aries-moon cub needs the routine survivable. Running both is a genuine skill. (You’ve been doing it by feel. Respect.)
- Their Mercurieshow each one processes & argues. A Gemini Mercury versus a Scorpio Mercury is a debate between a sparkler & a submarine, & now the dinner table makes sense.
- The element balancecount fire, earth, air & water across both charts. One child heavy in what the other lacks explains half the friction & most of the fascination. They’re each other’s missing element, in the flesh, sharing a bathroom.
Sibling synastry — the geometry between them
Then there’s the overlay itself: synastry, cub to cub. Their planets make aspects to each other exactly like anyone else’s, & the cross-contacts describe the relationship you referee daily.
Moon trine moon & they weather storms together — the big one instinctively soothing the small one. Mars square Mars & the wrestling is structural: two wills at a fixed angle, in bunk beds. Sun conjunct moon between siblings is the classic devotion signature — one lights up, the other warms. Most sibling pairs carry some of each, which is why the same two children are allies at breakfast & at war by lunch. The geometry holds both. So do they.
The family as a constellation
Widen the lens & the whole household is one system of charts — each person a fixed point, every relationship a thread between two skies. Add your chart & your partner’s to the cubs’ & patterns pop: the family’s shared emphasis (three Scorpio placements at one table — blessings), the element nobody carries, the one child holding all the air & doing the whole family’s talking.
This is honestly my favorite way to use astrology in a family: nobody is the difficult one. Everybody is a point in the constellation, & the shape only works with every star in it. Ursa Minor needs all seven.
Raising them as themselves
The practical gift of sibling astrology is permission to parent them differently — out loud, without apology. The bedtime that works for the Capricorn moon has never once worked for the Pisces moon, & the charts say it never will. Fairness, in a family, means each cub getting what their own sky asks for.
So pull both charts. Read them side by side on the couch after they’re finally asleep. Two skies. One roof. Yours. What did each of them bring that the other one didn’t?
Common questions
Why are my children so different if they have the same parents?
Each child’s chart is set by their unique birth moment — the moon changes signs every 2.5 days & the rising sign every two hours, so even close-in-age siblings carry different emotional wiring, processing styles & temperaments. The charts make the differences visible & parentable.
What is sibling synastry?
The comparison of two siblings’ birth charts — reading the aspects between their planets to describe the relationship dynamic: where they naturally ally, where friction is structural, and what each activates in the other. It’s the same technique used for any two charts, applied to the bunk beds.
Should I compare my children’s sun signs?
Compare their moons first instead — the moon governs emotional needs & soothing, where siblings differ most at home. Sun signs alone are one layer, and two children who share one can still be profoundly different children.
Can astrology help with sibling rivalry?
It reframes it. Recurring conflict usually maps to hard aspects between the siblings’ charts — a fixed geometry, nobody’s fault — and the charts show what each child’s wiring needs in the heat (discharge, space, witness, order). Parents also stop expecting one approach to fit both.
